Advanced Arthroplasty & Basic Arthroscopy Fellowship Program

Length: 6 months

Number of positions: 2

Type of Fellowship: Surgical & Clinical Fellowship

Fellowship Director: Professor Dr. Bharat Mody

Our Mission

At Welcare Hospital, our mission is to provide compassionate patient care and advanced training for both current and future orthopedic surgeons. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders in the fields of Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy.

For over 30 years, our renowned Fellowship Program has shaped the careers of orthopedic surgeons, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to excel in Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy. Our fellows collaborate closely with faculty, research teams, and the broader healthcare team, becoming an integral part of our hospital community.

With a team of five full-time, highly experienced surgeons specialising in Hip and Knee Replacement surgery, our program handles over 8,000 cases annually. This allows fellows to gain hands-on experience and deep clinical expertise. Upon completion, graduates are fully prepared to lead their own arthroplasty practices, with a strong foundation in both research and education.

Our Vision

We aim to be a leader in orthopedic innovation and excellence. Through cutting-edge research, education, and exceptional surgical outcomes, we strive to enhance patient mobility and quality of life on a national level.

Program Overview

Our Arthroplasty Fellowship is a comprehensive 6-month program, specialising in primary and revision total joint replacements of the hip and knee. It is designed to prepare orthopedic surgeons for a successful career in arthroplasty surgery. Fellows will receive extensive training in all areas of adult reconstruction surgery, including trauma, arthritis, congenital, and post-traumatic cases. This is a highly practical fellowship, where surgical responsibility is gradually increased based on the fellow’s skill and clinical maturity.

The program focuses on diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders, understanding their underlying causes, exploring various treatment options, and managing post-surgical outcomes and complications. Fellows play a key role in patient care, from initial assessment and preoperative evaluation to surgical procedures, postoperative management, and rehabilitation.

The educational curriculum includes personalised lectures led by Prof. Dr. Bharat Mody, covering topics such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, and immunology, all related to adult reconstructive orthopedics.

Fellowship Duration: 6 months

Program Objectives

  • Develop a systematic approach to patient evaluation and decision-making in arthroplasty.
  • Hone examination skills for patients with arthritis and joint-related conditions requiring replacement surgery.
  • Master fundamental and advanced surgical techniques in both primary and revision arthroplasty.
  • Gain experience in scientific research, data analysis, publication, and surgical audits.

Clinical Training

Throughout the fellowship, each participant will be involved in over 500 cases, with around 15% being complex revision surgeries. By the end of the program, fellows are expected to demonstrate advanced proficiency in diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with joint replacement needs.

Fellows will participate in outpatient clinics, gaining extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a diverse patient population. They will also work intensively in the operating room, ensuring they have the hands-on training necessary to succeed in their future careers.

Surgical Training

Fellows rotate among five leading surgeons, all members of the Arthroplasty Team, which performs some of the highest volumes of adult reconstructive surgery in Gujarat. Fellows will assist and perform surgeries under close supervision, with their role clearly defined before each procedure. This ensures they are exposed to a wide variety of surgical techniques and cases, from routine joint replacements to complex revisions.

This fellowship is an ideal pathway for orthopedic surgeons seeking to specialise in Joint Replacement surgery of the Hip and Knee, or Arthroscopy, offering unparalleled experience and training in a supportive, high-volume clinical setting.
